American Board of Surgery Qualifying Exam

The American board of surgery qualifying exam (AKA “the written boards”) is the first step of a two-step process to obtain board certification in surgery by the American Board of Surgery. The certifying (oral) exam is offered several times through the year. An offer to schedule the oral exam is made at the time of notification of passing the written boards.

Approximately 1,200 surgeons take the qualifying exam each year, with a pass rate ranging from 75-78% over the last few years.
